Chicago Interns Move Up Corporate Ladder
RedEye
Tracy Swartz — Derek Moody came to Chicago prepared to make coffee. A student at Brigham Young University in Utah, Moody moved to Chicago in May to intern at Grant Thornton, an accounting firm in the Loop. Moody had never had an internship before, so he came to Chicago ready to do anything and everything, including run errands and other expected "intern" tasks. But Moody, 24, said he has yet to ask his co-workers how they like their coffee. Instead, he said he verifies that clients' accounting records are accurate and sits in on important meetings.

Young Workers Push Employers for Wider Web Access
CHICAGO — Ryan Tracy thought he'd entered the Dark Ages when he graduated college and arrived in the working world. His employer blocked access to Facebook, Gmail and other popular Internet sites. He had no wireless access for his laptop and often ran to a nearby cafe on work time so he could use its Wi-Fi connection to send large files. "It was a constant battle between the people that saw technology as an advantage, and those that saw it as a hindrance," says the 27-year-old Chicagoan, who now works for a different company.

HRmarketer: Placing Gen Y. Brill Street’s Interesting Business Model
Mark Willaman
I recently had a delightful conversation with a new HRmarketer.com member Brandi Blades from an intriguing new company called Brill Street. Tapping young talent offers flexibility, cost savings
Chicago Tribune
CHICAGO, IL — When Kristen Prinke couldn’t find a job in her field, she tried the next best thing: a paid internship at a company that was expanding. Now, 16 months later, Prinke, 24, has a full-time job in marketing at Leapfrog Online in Evanston. “It’s a great way to get your foot in the door and show them what you can do,” she said. Meanwhile, Leapfrog got the advantage of trying out an entry-level worker before extending a job offer, said Amy Weir, the company’s director of human resources. By hiring someone young, the company saved money and got to train Prinke its own way.
