#6 Total Attorneys
Having a sense of ownership about one's job is important for anyone, but for Generation Y, it's paramount. At Total Attorneys, fostered in each employee is a sense of personal agency within the larger framework of the company, which keeps employees relaxed and happy to be in the office and in turn, everyone benefits.
Edmund Scanlan, CEO, says, "The more you do for your employees, the more they do for you." Total Attorneys, which develops solutions that help small law firms and solo practitioners streamline their practices, works with each employee personally to make them feel at home. "I have lunch with every new employee," says Scanlan. "I tell them that this is their place; they shouldn't be afraid to change things up. If you want to paint the office wall red, do it." The sense of freedom extends to checking emails and Facebook, too. "You get so much more out of people if they aren't scared to check their social media sites," Scanlan says.
There's no fear in asking about opportunities for advancement, either. "I started in sales and after about eight months, I asked if there were other opportunities," says Project Manager Andrew Kaplan. "Sales wasn't what I had in mind for a career, so they developed a position for me." Similarly, HR Assistant Ellen Margovsky found Total Attorneys was willing to work with her career needs. "I came in with no HR experience," she says, "but my manager has been extremely helpful." Margovsky often attends seminars and training sessions and says that if she finds certifications that will benefit the company, management is willing to foot the bill.
Employees enjoy a gym on the premises with discounted memberships, a TV room, and beer and wine on Fridays. There's still time for corporate responsibility, too. The company holds events that raise money for various charities throughout the year, including Purse of Hope, which provides housing and schooling for impoverished girls in Africa.
"I couldn't imagine myself working anywhere else," says Kaplan. "I have found a home here. It's the perfect storm of everything going right inside an office."
