#8 Threadless

Some companies offer a great fit for emerging new minds; other companies are pure Generation Y. At t-shirt design and production company Threadless, the values and needs of Gen Y are literally woven into the product. At Threadless, Generation Y isn't one sector of the business--it is the business.

"We're a very inclusive culture so everything fits. You'll hear the warehouse playing anything from movie soundtracks to Bob Marley to heavy metal."

The company was founded by Generation Y. "The 'outgoing, individualistic' people who work here love their jobs. I can count on one hand the people who have left over the past couple of years," says employee John Festa.

The company's Gen Y vibe is perfect for their clientele, too. "Our clients are primarily Generation Y, which is our target audience," says Marketing Vice President Cam Balzer. "It's really important for us to live and breathe that every day and to have people here of that same mindset, who share attributes of that audience."

The mindset is stoked by the environment in which Threadless employees work. "We've got a really open work space physically," Balzer says. "It's very collaborative and people IM each other. We're a very inclusive culture so everything fits. You'll hear the warehouse playing anything from movie soundtracks to Bob Marley to heavy metal. It's indicative of how open everyone is."

It's not uncommon to see any number of dogs whizzing past you while at the office, and if employees need to take a break, the enormous TV with the XBOX, the Wii console, or the warehouse music all provide respite. And the area in which employees work is encouraged to be nurturing, too. Every department is given a budget to create their workspace. A large amount of the office walls are covered with graffiti.

There are plenty of opportunities beyond the office, too. "I've gotten to work with people from Australia and all over Japan," says Art Director Ross Zietz. "Design is a universal language. I've actually gotten to go visit them and stay with them. I went to Europe and stayed with some of the people I met at this job."

Zietz says working at Threadless has helped his career develop because of its cache in the design and art community. "People hear about Threadless and they think it's cool." Zietz says. "It's cool to say I work for a company that's really popular throughout the community."
