#21 Sandstorm Design
There are those out there who thrive in a strict, regimented environment--and that's fine. If that's not your bag (which is the case for many Generation Y recruits), there are many workplaces that place a premium on freedom and the uniqueness of each worker. Marketing and web design firm Sandstorm Design is one of those places.
It starts with a personality test. Principal Sandy Marsico feels it's important to know what kinds of people are assigned to particular projects. "We share the [profile] answers with everyone to understand that person's type. Their ID's are posted on their desk so they can help each other and work with that [knowledge.]"
Marsico has big respect for her Generation Y employees, whatever kind of personality they happen to have. "When you have a Gen Y employee, they sponge up to anything and they're not afraid to say they've got an opinion. They're invaluable to us."
Interactive Account Manager Alma Meshes has definitely been allowed to be herself. Says Meshes, "Whatever I dream up, that's where I go. I was hired to do administration and now I manage web applications. I've done consulting. You throw it at me and I do it." Meshes also appreciates the flexibility of her schedule. "I work from home when there's a lot of snow."
The interests of each employee are encouraged, too. Zach Schneider, a newly hired Web Developer says his job allows him a great work-life balance. The self-proclaimed "Twitteraholic" says working for a smaller, relaxed company gives him the freedom to pursue his hobbies--one of which is a "Tweet-off" every Tuesday.
Sandstorm allows personal freedom, yet still maintains a strong company bond. "Everyone is very supportive and self-motivated," says Schneider. "If I can't get something done they'll find a resource to get it done." And whatever your interests, the company is invested. When a newly hired employee mentioned to Marsico that she watched Big Love, Marsico went home that night and watched the show to be able to better relate to the newbie on the block.
Says Marsico, "I've discovered that my purpose is to provide great jobs for great people, and to hire more good people that need a good place to really thrive and grow." That would please any personality.
