After speaking with MKTG, INC General Manager John Mousseau, one thing was clear; MKTG cares for its Generation Y employees. The integrated marketing communications agency is composed of nearly 30% young professionals eager to hit the ground running.
Mousseau says, “Generation Y has impacted the workforce dramatically. For generations prior, it was important to get out of college and get a job. For Generation Y, it’s more than that. They want to begin a career but also give back to the community and make a difference. It’s not about money, it’s about how they’re being treated.”
MKTG has a number of clients whose target audiences include Generation Y and younger. They have taken a fresh approach to the office structure and work division. The agency believes it’s important for these clients to be matched up appropriately with young professionals who fall in the desired target audience. Clients want to deal with account managers who get what they want and know how to deliver results.
Senior level management at MKTG understand the importance Gen Y’s desire to make an impact so they’ve also fostered a team setting and camaraderie in their work culture. Mousseau says, “We try to do a lot of things from a teamwork perspective in and out of the workplace. A lot of the clients and business we’re going after are Gen Y-focused. We want to get brands that employees WANT to work with. We ask them, ‘What brands do you want to work with,’ and we go after them. We’ve received a great response to this attitude.”
Another area of business where this mutual respect is displayed is in office meetings. MKTG, INC used to use standard office meetings but found them to be inefficient. They didn’t fit with the work culture and employees weren’t as engaged. MKTG management switched to a monthly meeting schedule and the response has been overwhelming. Employees come to meetings enthusiastic and charged. Each person brings something to the meeting to share with the office (think “show and tell” but for grown ups!). This caters to Generation Y’s need to be heard and included in the decision-making process. Mousseau says that this helps give Gen Y a platform and gives the office a shared voice, not a fake one.
Young professionals who come to work at MKTG are in it for the long haul. Management at the agency has an equal investment in their employees, which is why they instill a good sense of work/life balance with all office employees.
Mousseau says, “Work/life balance is really important to me. If I notice someone is constantly bringing his or her laptop home with him or her, I’m going to check in. That’s not healthy. People in this industry tend to work long hours as is. We want employees to have a healthy balance. No attention to one’s personal life is no good for their work life, and we want people here for a long time.”
MKTG encourages employees to enjoy their personal time by joining one of their company sport teams. Currently, the company is gearing up for bowling season with their new bowling team. The agency has also had kickball and softball teams in the past. This group is open, collaborative, fun and creative. They understand the needs of Gen Y and how to make their young professionals integral parts of the agency.
