#27 Emerging Solutions
To be in the business of consulting means to be an expert in your field and in the art of communication. For Emerging Solutions, a professional services firm that helps their clients succeed using leading edge technology, mastering the job doesn't mean all work and no play. For Gen Yers at the company, this is good news.
"Youth and enthusiasm are important for consulting," says Don Sweeny, Managing Partner at the company. "In general, with consulting you need people that have a lot of energy, attitude, and hunger. There can be long working hours and travel, so youthful enthusiasm is important for all consultants."
For Sweeny, this means Generation Y is a perfect fit. "Gen Yers understand rapid change with technology and they embrace it. They embrace change, accept change, and have youthful enthusiasm. They're all about the multi-tasking and going on to a new project. That's very positive for a consultant."
Jillian Sievert, an Human Capitol Consultant, who has been with the company for two years, says that if you don't have consultancy experience, it's okay. At Emerging Solutions, training is part of the deal. "I thought I was going to go to law school and was applying for jobs. When I interviewed here I just loved everyone I met. They look for people that have a broad background and can train to be a consultant."
Sievert adds that the office culture is one that's easy to love. "Everyone's very sarcastic, and we're close to the senior partners. There's no age gap, which I really like. A lot of my friends are consultants and I think I have the best work-life balance. The company allows a lot of flex time and the opportunity to work at home. I don't think I've really put in over 10 hours a day at the most. They're really good at sticking to a 40 hour work week."
Marketing Manager Erica Archer agrees that the office provides plenty of opportunity and freedom. "They give chances to people who don't necessarily have experience but do have the motivation. I started taking over events and really enjoyed doing it. Now I'm in charge of the whole marketing department--and this is my first job in this field."
In Sievert's expert opinion, "This is a great place to kick off your career."
